Outdoor Guernsey

kayaks and fishing weekend

24/25 May at Grandes Rocques Guernsey

Outdoor Guernsey would like to say a big Thank You to all that came down on Saturday to support the “Come and Try Day”. Considering that the weather wasn’t as nice as we hoped for we still had over 150 people attend and just over 100 members of the public came to try out Kayaking and sample the many types of Sit on Tops that were on display.

We both feel that with the support of our sponsors and partners we were able to provide people with a better understanding of Kayaking and also the Safety aspect of this growing sport. Our friends from Anglers afloat were kind enough to let people try out some of their fully kitted out Kayaks that they brought over from the UK and spent the day passing on their knowledge and expertise on what Kayak Fishing is all about. Nautical Guernsey provided us with the means to advertise this event which we think showed with the numbers that attended.

Condor Ferries supported the whole weekend with discounted rates for our UK contingent to travel over and also some prizes for the fishing competition.

Sean and Jamie from Quayside brought with them a large fleet of Ocean Kayaks for people to see and try and were busy throughout the day. John Rothwell from Tackledirect was constantly being asked to demonstrate his Kayaks also and provided some excellent advice on the Fishing side of things which you can find out more through http://www.guernseyfishingguide.com

The Guernsey Canoe Club and members of KAG (Kayak Association of Guernsey) were present with some examples of Surf Kayaks. Surf kayaking is also starting to grow over here,  Guernsey is represented on the world stage by the amazing Chris Harvey check out www.chrisharveyonline.net

Guernsey’s First Kayak Fishing Competition!

Considering the weather was not ideal we had 14 entries and everyone that I spoke with enjoyed taking part. The fish were not big by any means but we wanted to promote the fun aspect of this new sport and one of the GB Ocean Kayak Fishing team members said “what a beautiful location to hold a fishing competition, I'm just glad to be part of your first ever competition” I still think he secretly wanted to catch a Big Bass!

Thanks to John Rothwell for co-ordinating the event and to our sponsors for all the prizes they donated.

Last but not least we both want to take this opportunity to thank all our team from Outdoor Guernsey who all worked so hard through out the day and were the “key” to the success of the whole weekend.
